Offline Exhibitions of Tezos NFTs: Anything Interesting?

Many people don't understand the point of flying to Paris only to visit the Louvre. They don't know why visiting local galleries and seeing the works of little-known artists is essential. The height of incomprehension is buying tickets to NFT exhibitions to see live what can be downloaded in 4K.

And yet people go to off-chain exhibitions for a completely different experience: live-minting, talking to artists and collectors, sharing knowledge, and discovering new branches of art like augmented reality. Let’s look at Tezos’ most significant off-chain events this year, Art Basel and Proof of People.

Art Basel

Tezos’ most famous NFT event is Art Basel. It is a private, commercial international art fair. The organizers hold it annually in different cities worldwide: Basel in Switzerland, Miami, Hong Kong, and, since 2022, Paris. Art Basel collaborates with local institutions in the host city and helps to develop art programs.

Last week, the interactive exhibition “Minting live: Explore Tezos Art in Miami” was held from 1 to 3 December. According to tezosart, more than 8,000 people attended.

The event was dedicated to generative art and its impact on the world. Visitors watched works and listened to speakers on different topics: the geography of art, breaking the boundaries of creativity, the work of algorithms, intellectual property in NFT, and artists’ views on generative art. It’s almost 7 hours in total, so watch it on the Tezos YouTube channel.

Among the speakers, there were:

All the works on display can be found on the event page and purchased on the NFT marketplace’s page.

Proof of People

In July 2022, VerticalCrypto Art held the Proof of People exhibition in London, dedicated to various applications of digital art: from a regular DJ performance to an augmented reality fashion show.

Visitors to the exhibition mined snippets of NFT performances on Tezos, listened to AI poets perform, looked at their friends through Sutuverse’s NEONZ AR filter, and could win a chance to become a nude model for an anonymized on-chain portrait generator.

Among the speakers was Mehmet Akten (Memo Akten), author of the Distributed Consciousness collection with neural network-generated octopuses.

What’s the Point for NFT Artists

For artists, offline exhibitions can increase their visibility among art lovers, discuss ideas, and make new contacts.

Exhibitions also reveal the essence of digital art for those who still subscribe to the $1 jpeg stereotype.

And Art Basel also features celebrities from outside the Web3 ecosystem. For example, singer CardiB performed at last year’s Art Basel.

Conclusions

Off-chain exhibitions promote digital art in two ways. First, visitors see the most meaningful and aesthetically significant works. Second, they learn more about creating digital objects and realize how much work and creativity can be behind seemingly simple pictures.

If you can visit Art Basel or another NFT exhibition, by all means, take it.
